I’m Rabbi Matt Rosenberg, an independent rabbi based in Northern California, and I officiate personalized Jewish weddings throughout Lake Tahoe, Truckee and the Sierra Nevada.

There is something extraordinary about gathering beneath a chuppah surrounded by mountains, pine forests and the blue waters of Lake Tahoe. But the setting is only part of what makes a wedding sacred.

My goal is to help you create a ceremony that feels deeply Jewish, joyful, personal and genuinely reflective of the two of you.

Whether you are planning a large destination wedding at a Tahoe resort, an intimate lakeside celebration, or a ceremony in the mountains with your closest family and friends, we’ll build the wedding ceremony together.

A Jewish Wedding That Feels Like Your Wedding

Jewish tradition gives us an extraordinary framework for a wedding, but no two couples bring exactly the same histories, families, beliefs or relationships to the chuppah.

Some couples want a ceremony rich in traditional Hebrew liturgy and ritual. Others want Jewish traditions presented in ways that are especially accessible to family and friends from different backgrounds. Some couples arrive knowing exactly which traditions they want. Others aren't quite sure where to begin.

That’s completely fine.

We’ll talk about your relationship, your families, your connection to Judaism and what you want your wedding ceremony to feel like. I’ll explain the traditions and help you decide what is meaningful for you.

Your wedding might include:

  • A ketubah signing

  • Bedecken or another gathering before the ceremony

  • The chuppah

  • Kiddush and wine

  • Exchange of rings

  • Traditional Hebrew blessings

  • The Seven Blessings — Sheva Brachot

  • Personal vows

  • English and Hebrew readings

  • Participation by parents, grandparents, siblings or friends

  • Remembering loved ones who cannot be present

  • Breaking the glass — followed by a very enthusiastic “Mazal tov!”

My job is not simply to recite a ceremony. By the time we stand together beneath the chuppah, I want to know who you are, what brought you together and what marriage means to you.

Jewish Weddings Throughout Lake Tahoe

I officiate weddings throughout the greater Lake Tahoe and Truckee region, including:

South Lake Tahoe • Stateline • Incline Village • Tahoe City • Tahoe Vista • Kings Beach • Truckee • Olympic Valley • Northstar • the West Shore • and surrounding Sierra communities.

I am happy to travel throughout both the California and Nevada sides of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Many Tahoe weddings are destination weddings, so you absolutely do not need to live locally. We can do much of our preparation by video, phone and email before your wedding weekend.

A Destination Wedding Can Still Feel Deeply Personal

One challenge of a destination wedding is that many of the people helping create your wedding may not know you very well.

Your rabbi should.

The person standing beside you beneath the chuppah is participating in one of the most intimate and significant moments of your lives. Your ceremony shouldn't sound as though your officiant met you twenty minutes earlier.

That's why I spend time getting to know every couple.

We'll talk not only about the mechanics of the ceremony, but about the two of you: how you met, what you admire in one another, what your families mean to you, what Judaism means in your lives and what kind of marriage you hope to build together.

That relationship allows the ceremony to be both sacred and unmistakably yours.

Warm, Inclusive and Rooted in Jewish Tradition

Jewish weddings contain rituals that have connected couples across generations, and I love helping couples understand and make those traditions their own.

At the same time, there isn't one template that every couple must follow.

I officiate for LGBTQ+ couples and welcome couples and families representing a wide variety of Jewish backgrounds, practices and experiences.

Maybe one of you grew up going to Jewish summer camp, celebrating every holiday and knowing the words to the blessings.

Maybe you're still learning what goes underneath a chuppah.

Either way, you're welcome.

I'll help you understand the traditions and make thoughtful choices while keeping the ceremony focused on what matters most: the commitment the two of you are making to one another.

What Is Included

My wedding officiation includes:

  • Pre-wedding consultations to get to know you and your story

  • Guidance in designing your Jewish wedding ceremony

  • Help choosing traditions and rituals that are meaningful to you

  • Consultation about your ketubah and ketubah signing

  • Assistance with Hebrew prayers, readings and ritual language

  • Creation of a personalized ceremony

  • Coordination with your wedding planner and other professionals as needed

  • Travel to your Lake Tahoe or Truckee wedding

  • Officiation of the ketubah signing and wedding ceremony

Rehearsals and participation in additional wedding-weekend events may also be arranged.

Planning the Jewish Parts of a Tahoe Wedding

Destination weddings sometimes involve a little more logistical planning, especially when incorporating Jewish ritual.

Your chuppah needs to work with your venue and ceremony location. You'll want to think about who will sign your ketubah and when the signing will take place. If family or friends are participating in the Seven Blessings, we'll make sure everyone understands their role beforehand.

Lake Tahoe also has its own Jewish community and resources on both sides of the lake. If your wedding weekend involves Shabbat, kosher food or other religious needs beyond the ceremony itself, I'm happy to help you think through those questions as part of your planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you travel to both the California and Nevada sides of Lake Tahoe?

Yes. I officiate weddings throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin, including South Lake Tahoe, Stateline, Incline Village, Tahoe City, Truckee and surrounding communities.

Do we have to live in Sacramento or Northern California?

Not at all. Many of the couples getting married in Lake Tahoe are planning destination weddings from elsewhere in California or around the country.

We can conduct our planning meetings by phone and video before the wedding weekend.

Do we need to know exactly what kind of Jewish ceremony we want?

Absolutely not.

Part of my role is helping you understand the traditions and decide what is meaningful to you. You don't need to arrive at our first conversation knowing the difference between a ketubah signing, bedecken or the Seven Blessings.

We'll figure it out together.

Can our ceremony include both Hebrew and English?

Absolutely.

We'll find a balance of Hebrew, English, traditional liturgy and personalized material that feels right for you and is accessible to your guests.

Can family members and friends participate?

Yes.

Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends can participate in many ways, including readings, blessings, holding the chuppah and participating in the Seven Blessings, the Sheva Brachot.

We'll discuss who you want to honor and how to involve them meaningfully.

Can you help us with our ketubah?

Yes.

I can help you think through the ketubah itself, the signing, witnesses and how the ketubah ceremony fits into your wedding day.

Do you officiate LGBTQ+ weddings?

Absolutely. All loving couples are welcome beneath the chuppah.

Can you attend our wedding rehearsal?

Usually, yes, depending upon scheduling and travel arrangements. We can discuss whether a rehearsal would be useful for your particular ceremony and wedding party.

What happens if weather affects our outdoor Tahoe ceremony?

Lake Tahoe is spectacular precisely because it is a mountain environment, and mountain weather doesn't always cooperate with wedding plans.

I strongly encourage couples planning an outdoor ceremony to work with their venue or planner on a realistic backup location. The Jewish ceremony itself can adapt beautifully whether we are beneath a chuppah beside the lake, among the pines or indoors watching the weather through the windows.

What matters is the people standing beneath it.
